The use of industrial computed tomography in the examination of ancient Chinese bronzes

Stephen D. Bonadies

Abstract

The study and understanding of eight Chinese bronzes was found to be greatly enhanced by the use of industrial computed tomography (CT) rather than conventional X-radiography. In combination with digital processing of the radiographic images, CT allows for cross-sectional X-radiographic images to be produced which can be more revealing of internal structural features. New advances in computed tomography and digitized image processing also provide a method for simulating cross-sectional, three-dimensional views of the object.
